Why Sleep Quality is Important for Women

, by Jas Gill, 2 min reading time

1. What is “Sleep Quality”?

According to the National Laboratory of Medicine, sleep quality is our self-satisfaction with all aspects of our sleep experience which include sleep efficiency, sleep latency, sleep duration, and wake after-sleep onset.

Poor sleep quality has been linked to sight impairment, mood swings and even Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Office for Women’s Health, women are more likely to have insomnia issues than men stating changes in hormones during menstrual cycles, pregnancy and menopause as reasons for affecting sleep.

2. What are the signs and reasons for poor sleep quality?

Signs of Poor Sleep Quality:

  • You wake up regularly at night.
  • You feel tired and have difficulty concentrating during the day and might have to grab a coffee during the day to stay alert.
  • You find it difficult to fall asleep when you lay down for the night.
  • You have been diagnosed with insomnia.

These are the major signs of poor sleep quality but other signs can lead to poor sleep quality.

Reasons for Poor Sleep Quality:

3. How can sleep quality be improved?

Creating a relaxing bedtime routine and going to bed at a fixed time every day can help women improve their sleep quality. Also, make sure you are getting enough sleep (women should get 7-9 hours of sleep). Finally, avoid having any caffeine less than 7 hours before your bed time. We spoke about more ways to improve your sleep in one of our other articles - read it here.

If you’ve tried these things and you don’t notice any changes or improvement in your sleep and still wake up tired, groggy and exhausted - please contact your doctor.
